Paris is all I need

This Japanese girl was incredibly elegant. It was one of the first beautiful people of Paris I saw during this little holiday, Friday night in the Marais
The Marais, my parisian biggest love
Inside "Merci" shop
She had a classic Vanessa Bruno bag that I've always liked and these very nice fringed Oxfords

Centre Pompidou... It seems I have some kind of destiny with orange bikes

(I was listening to this song while drawing):

I don't want to speak too much today, you already had the words-flood yesterday and that's enough!

It would be great if you could breath the same atmosphere that I felt in Paris through these images, but I know it's almost impossible (I would need a better camera... and better drawings! ahah)

Sometimes I would like to be a street-style photographer to catch all the styles, the nice people, and the situations I see around me, but I am too shy to ask people to take a pic of them... I try to draw once home but inevitably the result is a bit diluted compared to the "original"... But I still hope that in this way I manage to convey at least the 0,01% of what I see...

Good night all of you!

  3. @Maelle: Your drawing school is next to the Marais?? You know that I can hate you for this?? Or alternatively move to Paris and start to go to the same school ahahaha

No really, now I understand why you're drawings are like that... it's the atmosphere that you breathe every day mixed with your talent... ahhh lucky girl!

Where is the school? I was staying in the corner with Rue Amelot (it's the house of the aunt of my sister's boyfriend)

    @Anonymous: ahahahahah ????

@Katie: thank you so much!!! This is so nice of you!!

  4. Oh Al these illustrations are SO wonderful!! They have such a true genuine flare. It breaks my heart that you aren't studying fashion illustration with me. I feel like if you're managing to produce as you do while studying a whole other course load entirely, it has to be coming from the heart. Keep the posts coming. I love illustration integrated with photographs, real flavor from the source.

    Big Hugs,

  5. this is such a wonderful post. visual-wise even one of my favourites i guess. how you captured the atmosphere in the drawings and photographies alike. so inspiring. long skirt with a fluffy coat... sigh, sometimes i really wish we had some (only a few, please) really cold days here in dubai. i don't even want a fluffy coat (am too small for it anyway), but loads of long layers.

taking pictures of other people - i know what you mean. even in tokyo - where girls actually wanted to be photographed - i failed. big time. too shy. :(

  7. @Meag: I almost cried when I read what you wrote! Thank you!

When I come back home from work usually it's later than 6:30 or 7, sometimes I even have to study for some extra stuff I have to do (presentations, conferences, meetings and stuff like that). I spent the last year in a life that was made only of work and work and work, even when I wasn't there my mind was set on the experiments or the presentations or the project to write for a scholarship. At one point I really felt that if I wasn't going back to all the things I loved, Science aside, I would have broke apart. That's why I started to draw again and now I really feel it as a necessary moment of my day: empty my head from work and lab stuff and draw and write for the blog.

But I'd love to study fashion illustration with you too!! ahah

    big big kiss

@Kazuko: it wasn't really fluffy... I drew it like that but it looked more like tweed, I think. But it's true it had that irregular sac-like shape (that I love so much but it doesn't suit me because I am too fat ahaha). And then the long stretch skirt and the wedges and the Chanel bag... ahhhh she was amazing!

You never go to Germany? I would really miss winter... at 25 degrees I start to suffer! ahahah

And Oh, In Japan I would have taken constantly pictures of people if I dared! But I was even more scared because, you know, they never say "No" so I started to think "what if they say OK but then they feel unease and hate me" and so on... so in the end no pictures at all. I know, I think too much, shit, I should just Go & Conquer! :D

    kiss kiss kiss

@taste area: Yes Merci is wonderful!!
I bought a set of plastic cutlery (fork, knife, spoon and coffee spoon) because I often bring my lunch to work. They are so cute, they look like they're made of ice!! (and for 20 euros I bet they are ahah)

Thank you very much for your compliments!! And I am happy you like the song!!

  10. Your illustrations are gorgeous, I'm literally speechless. Don't put your drawings down: they're as good, if not better, than streetstyle photos!

And very surprising to see you live in Belgium, I live in Antwerp ;).

  12. I love your photographs and your illustration is very nice! it's a bit strange to see Paris through your eyes, it feels like i've never seen Paris before. It's a way of seeing my town with a new eye ;)

    Bonne nuit Al! xxx

  13. Hi, I don't mind the questions at all! I figured I'd answer them here in a comment, instead of answerring them on my own blog, so you'd see them immediately ;) (you don't have to publish it though)...

    Anyway, thanks for your compliments!
I live very close to Antwerp, the city itself is only five minutes away, so a great combination of quiet and city life!

I did the nails myself, since I love experimenting with my nails ;)! It really was like she explained it on her blog, so it was easy. Only thing I did differently, was applying the bottom layer in the morning and the top layer in the evening, giving the bottom layer enough time to dry, otherwise the stickers would tear off the bottom layer...

I just went through a bit of your archives, and I'm going to say it again; your drawings are amazing! Do you make a living as illustrator (if you don't: you should, you're great :p) or is it just a hobby for your blog?

  14. @Gigi: ahahah what you said it's kinda interesting: thinking about it actually it's what crosses my mind too when I see other people talking about Florence (like Garance Doré or the Sartorialist).

I think it's because we (them in the case of Florence, me in the case of Paris) see these cities with a tourist-like perspective: we miss the daily life of the city, which is the one that gives everything a different colour if you live in it. I think it makes a strange effect to see your city with these different eyes, but I hope it was not a bad effect :D

Bises bises bises :D et bonne nuit!

@Salony: The answer to your comment is on your blog now ;-)

  15. ah! I love Paris!
your illustrations are very nice!! I have also thought to make illustrations of people I see on the street (i'm not the best person for street style photography), but I suck at drawing too :P
    Keep up the good work!!

  16. This post really created an oasis of quietness and peace for me. Plus, it made me want to visit Paris and never leave it :)
I think your drawings are just wonderful and have a lot of character.

  17. @Anna: thank you!! Well, why don't you try to draw? At least a sketch!
Or if you really really don't want to draw, what about trying to re-create the style of that person with a collage? (like with polyvore)

I think it's really good to fix the images of those cool people in your head somehow... For me they contribute a lot to make me remember the style and atmosphere of a city I visit, or simply they are able to give me ideas and inspiration. Some people really are incredibly cool!

@Orjen: You don't know how much your comment made me happy, really.
You really made my day... Do you know what it means to make the day of a person?? :D
Really, it's cloudy and cold and foggy outside, but thanks to you the feeling now in my mind is that I am on a tropical beach with a cocktail in my hand and a pile of fashion magazines next to me... Thank you!!!

Pass by more often, you're my natural anti-depressant drug!! ahahaha
