Thoughts on being à la mode in winter... Is that possible in Gent??

Really.
I'm asking this question with all my heart because I am desperate.
Help me!

I used to love winter. I loved the feeling of the stings on my nose and cheeks in a very cold January morning, the snow, the chilly sunny days when the ground is pure frost but there is no cloud in the sky, the Christmas atmosphere and wearing coats, scarves and gloves.

Now I understand that I did because I am Italian and I lived in Italy for 25 years untilI came here. Even though I lived in a quite cold place (especially veeery foggy and humid) now I know the truth:

In Italy, winter is a choice.
(Exception: people who live on mountains above 800 m)

In Italy, you CAN be happy if your cheeks freeze and you have to wear coat+hat+scarf+gloves. Because it is not like this EVERY day, 3-4 months a year.
Moreover, it can be really cold during mornings and evenings but if the sun shines you can really feel the warmth and benefits of the light in the middle of the day. You don't have to look like the Michelin-man all day long in your padded jacket.

In Italy you CAN choose to wear flats in January, if it doesn't rain. You CAN fix your hair because the wind is not going to destroy all you efforts in olympic record time. You don't have to wear anti-rain superstuffed-with-warm-materials jackets if you don't want to be sick and all wet after half a day out (well, Belgians are an exception but maybe I'll talk about these iron men and women later on).

Basically, in Italy you can dress (and do your hair...) with style effortlessly. All year long.

Here... No.

But I want to! There must be a way!!
There must be an intersection between the set of fashion and the set of Flemish weather!!

But how?

So, let me describe my situation now.

1) In Gent it's cold, very cold.

It's on average -5 °C all day long (max temperature these days = -2 °C) and if I remember correctly from last year it will go on like this until February.
So you have to keep warm. Forget those cute capes and lovely camel coats that are so chic this year.

OK, you'll say. In Paris it's very cold too, but Parisiennes are oh so fashion!
If you're cold, you can wear (fake) fur! It's totally in this year, Chanel approved!

Well, if you believe that I can wear fur and solve the problem let me add one thing.

2) In Gent it's cold, very cold + In Gent always rains/snows.

"Use an umbrella you stupid girl! Don't you see those cool Londoners? Don't use rain as an excuse, come on!"

Let me add another thing

3) In Gent it's cold, very cold + In Gent it always rains/snows + Gent is windy as hell.

Translation n° 1: Forget your umbrella.
(why: the umbrella itself will be disintegrated after 2 minutes and/or it will act as a sail and you'll find yourself on the other side of the English channel without even noticing).

Translation n° 2: Forget your hairstyle. Any kind.

It's harder now to find how to be fashion in these conditions, uh?! Tsk...

And it's not even finished:

4) In Gent it's cold, very cold + In Gent it always rains/snows + Gent is windy as hell + Gent streets in winter are often covered with ice

Heels?
Leather soles?

Forget them

And now, last but not least, the cherry on the cake:

5) In Gent it's cold, very cold + In Gent it always rains/snows + Gent is windy as hell + Gent streets in winter are often covered with ice + In Gent the city center pavements are  undergoing a huge, massive maintenance .

There are, litterally, abysses in the ground, cables coming outside the sidewalks, mud and stones everywhere (I also have some perplexities about their safety policies but I don't want to talk about this, I have other concerns right now ahaha!), new unexpected and partially fixed tram tracks...

And even the parts where there are no works are completely covered with very old and protruding cobblestones, so it's very difficult to walk with nice shoes (I think you got what I mean...) and they also get ruined quite easily.

You have to have comfort shoes, really.

I am wearing almost only sneakers lately. And a 35 € Coveri version of UGG boots (if it doesn't rain/snow). For God's sake.

So how do I cope with this?
I don't know, really. I'm totally hopeless.
I don't know if I'll ever find a stylish, comfortable and warm way to dress in these conditions. Do you think it's possible? Or do I have to suffer?

In the end, to cheer up the mood of this post, before I'm going to bed whining and crying over my misery, I leave you with a very beautiful picture from a 2007 Issue of New York Times T magazine:

Dior by Joh Galliano.

This is how winter should be like. Always.

Beautiful shops in Gent

Last sunday, when I was wandering in the city center streets and admiring the shop windows, I thought that I would like to show all the little shops that Gent has to offer.
I come from Florence, which is one of the world fashion cities, so I'm quite used to beautiful shops. But some shops in Gent have an atmosphere that I never saw in Italy: they have an attention to details and decoration that you can rarely see in other places. I think that, among the cities I visited, only Tokyo offer places like these: cosy, romantic and full of very nice little things that make you happy only by looking at them. But this together with the scenery of a beautiful, old and quiet city... well, that's what makes Gent so special.

So these are a few of my favourites, I will post some more in the future (also some clothing shops) but I think that first I'll wait to become bold enough to ask permission to take pictures inside!!

Dille & Kamille

Hornstraat, 15
9000 Gent
09 233 91 12
www.dille-kamille.nl; info@dille-kamille.be

For home-decor and kitchen fanatics this is a real paradise. You can find every possible tool to cook, decorate home and glassware. They also have a wide selection of teas and infusions, sweets and candies, marmalades and special gastronomy food (mainly italian, but I don't know why!). I love to come to this huge shop on saturday, to buy some little things for my home, my favourite licorice candies or just to have a look.

Home Linen

Korenlei, 3
9000 Gent
09 223 60 93
Open also on sundays.

An amazing shop in the most beautiful part of the old city center. It sells a very wide range of Belgian linen, vintage silver bijoux, home decoration items, accessories like bags and scarves. Everytime I enter I would like to come back with a truck and buy EVERYTHING. The prices are very good compared to the quality, too.

Just one view of Gent...

From the bridge where Dille & Kamille is.
Just in front, following the channel after about 200 m, there is Home Linen.

Papaver

Jan Breydelstraat 6
9000 Gent
09 233 14 48
Open also on sundays

This shop means a lot to me.
When I arrived in Gent last year I was alone, in a creepy and dirty student room in the red-light district (!). The first week-end I went all alone to have a walk in the center and I saw this plant & flower shop. It was so beautiful that I had to enter and its warm atmosphere made me feel home for the first time since I arrived. I decided to buy a little plant of Erica to keep me company, the owner was very nice to me and we chatted for a little while.
You know those little, maybe a bit stupid, things that can change your day and you remember for the rest of your life? This was one of those little things for me.

Ooooops you can see me in the window glass!

Huis - Annick Van Wesemael

Recollettenlei 2
9000 Gent
Tel: 09/335.87.61

www.annickvanwesemael.be

This is the new shop of Annick Van Wesemael in Gent. It sells home decoration, porcelains, frabrics, gift ideas and some furniture.
Very cosy and romantic atmosphere.
Here you can find a couple of pics taken inside the shop.

Oooops n° 2 you can see me also here!

When you're tired of walking and shopping in the city there are really tons of nice spots where you can stop for a coffee or a cup of tea.

Today I would like to suggest this place, a real blessing (and a curse! ahah) for every gourmand.

Julie's House

Kraanlei, 13
9000 Gent
Open also on sundays

I think these are nearly the best cakes and cupcakes I've ever tasted.
If you come here (and you're able to find a place to sit!) you could stay for hours without noticing, so pleasant is the atmosphere.
They make also great breakfasts and brunches and everything is also for take-away.
Tea and coffee are served in hand-decorated porcelain (that they also sell) which reminds the colours of the sweets prepared in this wonderful patisserie.

That's it for today, but expect another round soon!
Pictures are not so good but I hope you liked it anyway and... come to visit!

When Science meets Fashion

I am always super excited when I see science going out of its boundaries and reaching totally different shores, like fashion in this case.

It happens mainly with maths (for example to design patterns, like the ones I'll show in this post, made using fractals) or chemistry (not only direct applications like new fabric polymers and dyes, but also even more creative things like molecular kitchen. And have you ever noticed how beautiful chemistry and pharmacy glassware can be as home decoration and food storage containers?).

Here's a very beautiful example that I spotted on Oyster magazine:

Images from oystermag.com

The team of designers who created these beauties is called Tru$t Fun, you can find more informations about them and also a little interview about their idea on the oyster magazine article.

This is their website: Tru$t Fun

I love them!

There's always a reason to love Japanese artists

I just discovered this art show on the Japanese Design website.

It is a show by pop japanese artist Takashi Murakami in the Versailles Palace.

I think that the contrast between the manga-like, brightly coloured figures and the architecture and decorations of the palace is stunning: there could be no better choice than a place like an ancient castle (and plus hyper-decorated and baroque like Versailles) to emphasize the works of Murakami.

If you're in the area of Paris, you can visit the show until 12th December 2010
(why my car is out of order when need it the most?? I want to go to Paris!!!)

Dreamy Yamamoto

This is just amazing, no better word for it.
Not only the dress, but also how it fits the model, her skin... it's pure, dark perfection.

From Yohji Yamamoto Spring 2011 Collection

Another Rebecca Minkoff contest@Polyvore entry?? Oh please stop it Al!

Yeah I know, I'm boring, but the contest will end the 26th so no more entries for me I guess.

But I really wanted to post this one because it really represents me and what I love.
I think you can guess the inspiration by looking at it, so I'm not going to talk about it more.

Here it is!

My view of Iconic MAC 2011

I really like it this time... maybe because it really expresses my biggest passion (guess what... Japan?) so it was really natural and easy for me to make this one.

Oh please, tell me what you think! I would like to know your opinion about this one.

Al

PS:  A friend yesterday asked me what exactly this contest is, because she really didn't understand everything from my previous post. It's true I didn't explain.
Polyvore is a website where you basically can create sets (collages) based on fashion and style with images from the web (clothes, runway pics, magazines, any kind of image gives you inspiration). The designer Rebecca Minkoff opened this contest where you can design the new Iconic Morning After Clutch (this is the one I've been wanting to buy for months... I love it!). You have to use the elements provided by the website to make the bag and then explain your inspiration with images and/or text. Miss Minkoff will choose the best 10 and the winner one will result from an open votation of these 10 on her facebook page. The winner will attend the presentation of "his/her" creation at the NY Fashion Week in fall 2011 and the bag will be sold on Rebecca Minkoff's website. I think that now is understandable why I'm so into this :D

Who needs another Pilates addicted?

I'm just back from my first Pilates lesson and... WOOOOOW

Ok, ok I know... What's the news??
Everybody already knows it, it has been considered the top workout from celebs for like 10 years now and it's well established (at least on the kind of magazines that I like to read... you know... Vogue, Elle... ahah) that it's one of the most effective work outs for women.

My mother always tells me: "you always arrive after the firework show ended" (as you can imagine, my mother meant that I am always late, in all meanings possible... ahhh she's always soooo nice to me).

It's not only that I arrive after the firework show ended, the fact is that I've always been skeptic about Pilates... and Yoga... and Power Yoga. Stuff like that.

I'm an old fashioned (and a bit masochistic) girl: you want to lose weight? STARVE! RUN! Wanna put some muscles on? LIFT WEIGHTS FOR TWO HOURS A DAY!
Of course thinking in this way the feeling was that I had to put too much effort in it. Result: I didn't sport at all for years and my sofa assumed the shape of my (big) bottom.

It's true that now I'm a bit different person, I think, because I introduced exercise in my life but until today the skepticism towards Pilates remained ('cause... you know... I run. I lift weights. See above for the old-fashioned-girl-story.)

And instead... I'm amazed! Really!

The first two or three minutes of lesson I really heard my back, neck and knees make a sound that was something like SKRIK KROK SKRAK.
"Ops, maybe I needed a good stretching session, uh?!"

After fifteen minutes my muscles were screaming for more.

After thirty I was halfway bliss and pain.

After one hour, the stress of the day was lifted from my head and shoulders, I had a slight pain in my muscles (which meant they worked well, enough but not too much) and a really nice feeling of being all stretched from head to toe.

The fact is that is truly relaxing and stretching but it's also a very good work for your muscles: it's like you use your own body weight and shape to make them work (and work hard!). What's more healthy and smart than this?
Plus you have the feeling that they're really the kind of moves that make a woman's body look good.

Yep, I'm totally sold to Pilates!
It's true I'm an old style girl... but one very easy to buy!

Rebecca MInkoff contest on Polyvore

Today I was wandering through fashion blogs and just by chance I found myself on Polyvore... When I read the banner for the contest of Rebecca Minkoff I couldn't believe my eyes!

Practically, you have to design a new version for the Iconic Morning After Clutch in a polyvore set (they give you all the bag elements and variations that you can include). You should also give an idea of the inspiration you had.

I love Rebecca Minkoff and even more her Morning After Clutch... Actually, I've been wanting to buy a black one with golden hardware for months but I never manage to save the money ahaha!
Anyway, now you can understand that I couldn't miss this contest!

So I opened an account, had to understand how to make a polyvore set (never tried before... and it can be quite frustratring to find pics...) and in a couple of hours, voilà my creature!
Well... What do I think of it? I don't know...
If I think of Rebecca Minkoff, something urban and edgy comes to my mind. If I close my eyes this is the picture I get. I also love all the elements I added taken separately and. I also like the bag I created, I mean... I would buy it ahah!
But maybe I could have been a bit more "original"... What do you think?

Anyway, I had so much fun that before the contest ends I want to make another one... Maybe inspired by Tokyo and Japanese street style... I hope I won't have problems to find the pics!

Here's the link, try it it's fun!

My friend Stijn posted this on his facebook wall.
I really love both music & video.

(OMG how many posts today... you really see that it's Sunday and I've got nothing to do...)

In a cold winter sunday afternoon

Today was one of those grey and cold sundays in which it seems just about to snow.

We decided to go out after lunch, because I love this winter atmosphere just before the Christmas period begins: everything is in preparation for the big rush to shopping and parties but it hasn't started yet.

Patershol, the most ancient district of Ghent, is extremely beautiful in these kind of days so I decided to take some pics. Unfortunately the battery of my camera ran out after a few takes, how smart of me.

Anyway, here are just a couple:

Light shop & art gallery
A nice shop which sells umbrellas, hats, gloves and scarves
I think that next Saturday I'll go around to search for some christmas gifts and I also want to take pictures of some shops... I just feel that Ghent (and its little streets, the nice shops, the many cafes and tea rooms... ahhh...) is so underestimated as a touristic destination that I really want to show what it has to offer... at least to my friends!

And now some hot tea... I'm cold!!!
